Connections is deceptively hard. Here's how to crack it.
The Connections puzzle — sorting 16 words into 4 hidden categories — has become one of the most popular daily games online. But unlike Wordle's linear deduction, Connections requires lateral thinking, pattern recognition, and the ability to resist red herrings. Here are 7 tips from players who solve it consistently.
1. Start with the easiest category
Look for the 4 words that most obviously belong together. The yellow (easiest) group is usually straightforward — knock it out first to reduce the board from 16 words to 12.
2. Watch for words with double meanings
The puzzle designers love words that fit multiple categories. 'Bank' could be a financial institution or a river bank. 'Mercury' could be a planet, element, or car brand. Always consider alternative meanings.
3. Look for patterns, not just topics
Categories aren't always topical. They might be structural: 'words that follow FIRE' (truck, place, work, fly) or 'things that are also colors' (olive, rose, sage, violet). Think beyond obvious groupings.
4. Use the process of elimination
Once you've identified one category, the remaining words become easier. Each correct guess removes noise from the board.
5. Don't guess until you're confident
You only get 4 mistakes. Never guess randomly — wait until you can explain WHY 4 words belong together.
6. Say the words out loud
Hearing words spoken activates different neural pathways than reading them silently. You'll often catch connections you missed visually.
7. Play daily
Pattern recognition improves with practice. The more puzzles you solve, the faster you'll spot the designer's tricks.
